Our story

When I started my freelance career, I knew one thing for sure: my visual identity had to reflect me, not just the professional, but the whole person.

I began to delve into my culture, the one I'm most connected to. And that's where I found her: Mata, the ancient, dialectal name of Marta, the princess from Messina who fought for a love her time wouldn't accept: Grifone, the Moorish leader. When I read that story, I knew it was the right symbol. Not only because it evoked my first and last name, Marta Messina, but because it spoke of those who fight for something they truly believe in.

To that story I added two other elements of my Sicily. The Gorgon, another powerful, ambiguous, ancient female figure. And the zagara, the orange blossom, small and steeped in history, scented with roots.

Three symbols, one identity.

Where do we start from?

I wanted two aspects to unite: my professionalism and my history. The logo, like the entire visual identity, had to be clean and simple. But at the same time, it had to have character and personality.

Where do you get to?

The result was the union of the stories I wanted to tell in a single pictogram representing a mask, like those in Greek tragedies, simultaneously representing both the face of Mata and that of the Gorgon. Rather than a crown or hair made of snakes, it features a crown of orange blossom, the typical flower of Sicily. For the colors, shapes, and font, I was inspired by the Arab-Norman art of Sicily, and especially Palermo. The font, in particular, was chosen to recall the lettering on shop signs, but with a fresh, modern twist.

Mask

The Gorgon mask, which becomes the face of Mata, a princess from Messina, in a design reminiscent of a Greek theater mask. Two strong women who fought, embodying the duality of good and evil.

Crown

One of the symbols of Sicily is the Medusa,
a monster from Greek mythology
with snakes as hair. Here, we have replaced the snakes with orange blossom leaves,
which form the crown of Mata.
